Leaves are changing color, sunsets are a little earlier, nights are a little cooler, our routines are back in order… And cold and flu season is just around the corner! Yikes!
As a naturopath, preparing my patients for cold and flu season is an important responsibility. I’m very keen on prevention, and immune health is a conversation I have with all of my patients- whether or not you have already been struck down by a cold, this is the time to prepare. Here are some helpful tips to keep yourself and your family bug free trough the fall and winter!
Eat a WHOLE FOODS diet rich in COLORS. The more color, the more phytonutrients, antioxidants, and vitamin C – important constituents for building immune health.
AVOID refined sugars. Sugar has one of the most pronounced abilities to weaken the immune system. If there is one ingredient to avoid through the season, this is it!
Overindulge in GARLIC (raw) and GINGER. In addition to being anti-microbial, garlic also supports cardiovascular health and ginger has nice warming properties- it can be used in cooking or to make simple chai tea! (See below for recipe).
Get plenty of SLEEP. When we rest, our body recovers and heals. Any infection that may be rising within the body can be targeted and eliminated by proper sleep.
EXERCISE! Exercise not only improves blood flow and delivery of immune cells through the body, it also stimulates and strengthens the immune system.
Keep your GERMS to yourself! Wash your hands regularly- one of the simplest ways to prevent the spread of bacterial and viral infections is to wash your hands often! So let’s not take this simple technique for granted.
DEEP IMMUNE HERBS- Echinacea, Astragalus, Codonopsis, Eleutherococcus… Just to name a few- help to strengthen the immune system and build up white blood cells. Please consult with your naturopath prior to taking any herbal formulas as herbs can severely interact with pharmaceutical medication.
Finally, I am offering my patients a NATURAL FLU SHOT, which is a safe and effective way to boost the immune system. It is a natural injection administered in the arm (similar to a B12 shot) every 8 weeks or more frequently when ill. I am available for 15 minute consults to discuss this treatment option, or please feel free to ask any of our staff here at Brampton Physiotherapy + Wellness Institute!
